Vernon drivers curious about life behind the wheel of an electric vehicle will have a month-long chance to try before they buy when Plug’n Drive’s Western Mobile EV Education Trailer (MEET) arrives at Kal Tire Place from Sept. 3 to Oct. 4.

Sales-free hands-on experience

The event is part of Plug’n Drive’s cross-country EVs are for EVeryone tour and is scheduled to operate Thursday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is designed as an interactive, sales-free environment where residents and visitors can test drive a range of electric vehicles (EVs) while speaking one-on-one with volunteer EV Ambassadors.

According to Plug’n Drive, MEET Vernon will offer practical information on:

  • Charging options and infrastructure
  • Operating costs and government incentives
  • Seasonal performance, including winter driving
  • Model comparison to match lifestyle and budget
“MEET Vernon will offer drivers a practical, sales-free way to explore electric mobility,” said Cara Clairman, president and CEO of Plug’n Drive. “Our EV Ambassadors will be on-site to provide clear, unbiased answers on everything from charging and range to seasonal driving, empowering people to choose what works best for them.”

Who’s behind the event

The tour is partially funded by Natural Resources Canada and is championed by RBC. The City of Vernon is listed as the Local Presenting Sponsor for the MEET stop at Kal Tire Place. Plug’n Drive describes its Ambassadors as volunteers trained to offer unbiased guidance rather than sales pitches, a distinction organisers say is intended to help residents make informed purchases.

What Vernon drivers can expect

Visitors will be able to test drive a variety of vehicles, speak with experts about winter range and charging, and view educational displays about incentives and costs. Vehicles listed as available for test drives — noted as subject to change — include:

Vehicle Notes
Cadillac OPTIQ Available for test drives
Chevrolet Silverado EV Full-size electric truck
Hyundai IONIQ 5 Compact crossover
Hyundai IONIQ 9 New model offering
Nissan LEAF Longstanding mainstream EV
Toyota bZ Battery-electric offering from Toyota
Toyota Prius PHEV Plug-in hybrid option
Volvo EX60 PHEV Plug-in hybrid SUV

Community benefits and contest

Organisers say the MEET stop is an educational outreach aimed at lowering barriers for people who want to understand EV ownership — from the realities of winter range and charging times to how costs compare over the life of a vehicle. Staff will be on hand to explain available government incentives and what charging at home or in public looks like.

Visitors who test drive an EV at MEET Vernon can enter the tour contest. Plug’n Drive’s materials say two winners — one from Eastern Canada and one from Western Canada — will each receive 250,000 Avion points.

Local context

For Vernon, where longer commutes to Kelowna or regional travel into Alberta are routine for many drivers, the question of range and winter performance is particularly important. The MEET event offers a local opportunity to see how EVs handle Okanagan hill climbs, colder temperatures and the kinds of everyday trips Vernon drivers make.

Kal Tire Place’s central location and the City of Vernon’s sponsorship make the event accessible to residents across the North Okanagan. With a month-long presence, Plug’n Drive is giving multiple weekends for people with varying schedules to attend.

MEET Vernon opens on Sept. 3 and runs through Oct. 4, Thursdays to Sundays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to check Plug’n Drive’s event information for any updates to vehicle availability or schedule changes.

For Vernon drivers weighing the switch to electric, the trailer offers a practical first step: the chance to sit in the driver’s seat, ask direct questions and test how an EV fits into the rhythms of daily life in this Okanagan city.
