The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with two fires that targeted telecommunications infrastructure in the St. John’s area, police said in a statement on Wednesday.
Charges laid after Pippy Park blaze
The accused faces two counts of arson and two counts of mischief causing property damage, the RNC said. Officers were called to a fire at a communications tower on Nagles Place in Pippy Park on Monday, July 20, at around 7 p.m. NT. No injuries were reported, but the statement said the blaze caused significant structural damage.
Police attended a second site on Densmore’s Lane the following day after reporting of what the RNC described as “suspicious activity.” At that location investigators found evidence of an extinguished fire that was later determined to have also occurred on July 20.
Incident pattern under review
The RNC has said the arrest comes amid an ongoing probe into several fires believed to have been deliberately set against communications towers and related pole lines across the St. John’s area.

Earlier this week the RNC announced it was investigating six suspicious fires in recent days thought to be connected to the same pattern. Police previously responded to an earlier blaze off Linegar Avenue in the Shea Heights neighbourhood, first reported just after 11 a.m. NT on Saturday.
