A single-person remains in critical condition after a house explosion on Base Line Road West in London on Wednesday afternoon that sent debris across a residential block and forced emergency crews to cordon off the scene, officials said.
Blast shook nearby buildings, witnesses say
Neighbours reported hearing a powerful explosion shortly after 1 p.m. in the 100 block of Baseline Road West. The blast damaged the two-address property at 129–131 Base Line Rd. and blew out windows in nearby apartment buildings, witnesses said.
Ryan Mason, who lives across the street, told reporters he watched the house lift into the air for a moment before it collapsed. "A split second, the house was just up in the air. And by the time it came down, there was still rubble falling, hitting my window. It was glass everywhere!" he said.
"I saw a guy, right after it happened, a guy crawled out of the rubble. He came out from in the corner [of the house] and went into the parking lot. But he seemed to be, you know, shaken up, obviously went through the house explosion."
Kim Taylor, another nearby resident, said the blast made her entire home tremble and that the property appeared to have been vacant. "I actually thought it might have been an earthquake," she said. "I think it had maybe been abandoned recently. There has been a lot of homeless people camping out nearby, so, I think it was empty."
Emergency response and scene control
London Fire Department Chief Gary Bridge confirmed that one person was transported to hospital and is in critical condition. He said crews found a significant debris field and that the garage behind the home was the only other exposed building with substantial damage.
The area immediately around the property has been cordoned off while investigators and emergency services work at the scene. Inspecting officers are assessing structural safety and hazard risks from the remaining debris.
Inspector Doug Brown of the London Police Service said it is too early to determine whether a criminal investigation will be launched. Police and fire officials are cooperating to establish the cause of the explosion and whether anyone else was in the building at the time.
